The cycle of unsustainable development demonstrates that responding to the challenges and opportunities of development in South Africa requires a complex strategy which responds to the self-perpetuating cycle that threatens sustainability.

Poverty and inequality, low trust between organisations that must collaborate, low agency and resilience in citizens, and inconsistent government support for programmes all combine to create a highly challenging social systemic context for developmental work in South Africa. It is not possible for any entity to achieve sustainable change on its own and collaboration is difficult. Fixed brings a methodology which allows entities embarking on sustainable development to solve the problems of sustainable development by embracing the complex context of their work, generating strategies which respond to that complexity and maintaining principled, systemic, learning approaches to challenges to implementation, as they arise.
